Napping In The Afternoon

By Jo Jardim

Napping in the afternoon

Same bed

Same breath

She held my body

Arm wrapped around the life inside

She rubs her hand down my stomach

Picturing herself holding her granddaughter

I pretend to be sleeping

Three generations

Napping in the afternoon

One year since your passing

Laying in an empty bed

I pretend to be sleeping

You held my body, colder than I remember

Arm wrapped around the life inside

You’ll never hold this granddaughter

But you’ll hold her now, for a little while longer

Three generations

Napping in the afternoon
