There Exists Only The Present

By Anqi Ge

Only the present merits reverence

For the past is full of pain

And no hope awaits in the future.

In mid-air, existence hangs in between

With no roots from yesterday

Nor branches extending into the day after

Reality is maintained with

A perfect balance

Of gratitude and indignation

And truth is found

When the strength to fight is lost

And living is no longer an obligation

Fuelled by inertia and trepidation

Before chased up by the debts owed to time

To find out the only meaning of life is interim delight
